Colin has a Bachelor of Science in Photographic Science with Honours from the University of Westminster in London, England, so he likes to think of himself as a "SciArtist", being able to blend the art and science of photography to create impactful images.
Colin is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society, and belongs to the Professional Photographers of America, is a past member of the North American Nature Photography Association, and for two decades, has worked as a freelance photographer. Over the last 10 years he has pursued his passion of teaching and leading photo workshops, and now acts as a guide and educator to those looking to learn and improve their photography skill set while discovering the birds and wildlife of the Lowcountry in and around Charleston, SC.
He's the founder of two photo clubs which have almost 1000 members, and has led NANPA Field Events and meetup outings. Until he and his wife moved to Summerville, SC, Colin served on the Board of the Charlotte Camera Club, a PSA affiliate, and was an instructor with the Light Factory in Charlotte, NC, and with Nikonians, a worldwide Nikon users group. He used to run the photo department at the US National Whitewater Center, so you’ve probably seen his photos on billboards and on tv around Charlotte, NC.
In the autumn of 2019 Colin graduated as a South Carolina Coastal Master Naturalist which he did to learn about the local natural history so that he could share that knowledge with photography workshop attendees and provide a more well-rounded workshop experience. He now serves on the Board of Directors of both the Audubon Charleston Natural History Society as Vice President, and the Coastal Master Naturalist Association as President, and volunteers with the SC Statewide Master Naturalist Association to provide photography workshops and outings for the members as well as with Charleston County Parks to co-lead bird photography walks, and volunteers as an Alligator Ambassador and Bald Eagle Ambassador.
Since moving to the Charleston area, Colin started another photography club in Cane Bay and is involved with several local Facebook groups, providing regular outings to local photography hotspots.
To better understand the wildlife and nature photography genre, Colin spent a week in the tutelage of several world-renowned, award-winning photographers from National Geographic and other experts of the genre, and as such is an Alum of Photography at the Summit.
After spending time teaching as lead instructor in a college and in the corporate training world where he was a Train the Trainer Facilitator, he now mentors photographers, consults with companies, teaches, speaks at camera clubs, and leads workshops and tours in several countries. Having attended the PPA's Image Judging Workshop at the 2018 International Print Competition, Colin has also been invited to judge several photo competitions for local camera clubs, and spends much of his time giving image reviews and critiques for members so that they can improve their imagery. Over the course of his career he has trained hundreds of photographers, from beginners to professionals, and is looking forward to working with you, too.
